An Overview on Nonchalantness
If you’ve been on social media at all in the last few months, you’ve probably heard of this term: a nonchalant dreadhead. It’s been exploding in popularity recently, and for those who don’t know, a nonchalant dreadhead is a person who both has dreads and always appears calm and content. Now, obviously not everyone can get dreads, but being nonchalant might actually be beneficial to one’s mental health.
How exactly is it beneficial?
According to the Oxford Dictionary, nonchalant means feeling or appearing casual, not displaying anxiety.
This can lead to benefits such as:
Less stress- Staying calm allows people to not get overwhelmed easily, allowing them to calm down.
Better decision making- By taking the time to calm down, people can have time to collect their thoughts and think about their decisions.
Quick rebound- Feeling indifferent about negative events occurring can help one move on from it quicker.
Finally, think about it this way. If a problem occurs and you need to fix it, would you rather be calm or panicked while doing it? The problem will still be there no matter what your emotions are, so might as well choose the emotion that will let you think clearer, right?
Drawbacks
However, one drawback of appearing casual about everything is that you might appear uninterested, leading to conflicts. It is important to not overdo it and only appear nonchalant when applicable.
Ways to prevent this include: communicating clearly, being empathetic, and showing interest.
In conclusion, being nonchalant can have mental health benefits but can also impact those around you if overdone, so, as with all things, make sure to keep it in moderation.
