Body Image

A lot of Teens struggle with their body image as teenage years are a time for change and development. This can be alarming, but having a bad body image is harmful and helpful to nobody. With social media showing us only the picture perfect ideal body types, it can be difficult to navigate your own body image without holding yourself to unrealistic beauty standards. We should all remember that beautiful people come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and forms.

What is Body Image?

Body image is how you feel about yourself. It is your relationship with your own body. This can be impacted by mindsets bestowed by the media, society, peers, and even past experiences.

How do You Deal With These Outside Influences?

Remind yourself that not everything you see on social media is real. Take breaks and remember that even these influencers can struggle with their own body image.

If you have friends or accounts that make you feel bad about yourself, it might be time to cut them off. Block accounts, and talk to your friends to see if they can change how they talk to you.

Embrace your uniqueness. Everyone is not the same, and that is a good thing. If you struggle with these issues, consider seeking help. Ask a counselor, a therapist, or a trusted adult for advice. Remember, these people are there to help you not hurt you.

How do You Build a Positive Body Image?

Focus on yourself. Bettering yourself and focusing on your unique attributes is more important than what anyone else thinks of you.

Eat balanced meals, drink plenty of water, and do physical activities.

Train your self talk to be positive. Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, and treat yourself with kindness.

Set realistic goals: focus on growth and wellbeing instead of achieving a specific body type.
