Cancer causing acne products?
In a new study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology recently found that some popular acne products contain “unacceptable high” levels of benzene, a known carcinogen (substance that can cause cancer.)
After testing more than 100 benzoyl peroxide products, including sunscreens, hand sanitizers, and acne creams, researchers found that roughly one third of the products contained a high level of benzene.
The researchers that tested it, employees at Valisure, a Connecticut-based lab, and professors from Yale University tested these 111 products unopened and at room temperature.
Under these conditions, they found that 34% of the products, made by brands such as Proactiv, La Roche-Posay, CVS, and Clearasil contained elevated levels of benzene. The FDA limit is 2 parts per million.
Some products from Proactiv and CVS even contained 18 times and 13 times the FDA limit, respectively.
Products that didn’t contain elevated levels were made by Clean & Clear, Equate, Neutrogena, and Walgreens.
Important note!
Benzene is different from benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is not a carcinogen at all, and is generally safe to use. It is only when benzoyl peroxide is exposed to high temperatures, undergoing thermal decomposition, that it becomes benzene.
Researchers found that cold storage stabilizes benzoyl peroxide, preventing it from turning into benzene. The American Acne and Rosacea Society suggests refrigerating any products made with benzoyl peroxide for safer storage.
However, when benzoyl peroxide is exposed to UV and sunlight, benzene forms rapidly, meaning this could happen any time you use a benzoyl peroxide product and go in the sun.
To reiterate one last time, the American Acne and Rosacea Society recommends storing any products containing benzoyl peroxide at cold temperatures, away from any sources of heat or sunlight, and using the products within three months.
Dermatologist Saami Khalifian also says, “It’s a good idea to keep an eye on product recalls and stick to brands that are known for good quality control and transparency about their ingredients.”
In conclusion, be wary about benzoyl peroxide products in the future but keep in mind that not all of them are bad. They can still be useful for clearing acne and other purposes. Just make sure to do proper research before buying products.
